The City of Johannesburg (CoJ), through its Department of Environmental Infrastructure Service, invites qualified and unemployed graduates to apply for the Internship Programme. Programme Overview
Successful candidates will sign both an internship agreement and an employment contract, committing to full participation in all workplace and educational assignments as outlined in the City’s policies and procedures.
- Stipend: R10 109.86 per month (Basic Salary, no additional benefits)

1. Internship: Finance
Requirements:
- National Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Management Accounting, Finance, or an equivalent qualification.
Duties:
- Apply accounting procedures and policies within the Environmental Infrastructure and Service Department.
- Assist with the procurement of goods and services, processing of accounting entries, reporting, and record-keeping in line with MFMA and statutory requirements.
- Process creditors’ and debtors’ accounts, maintain the general ledger, and ensure compliance with the City’s supply chain management policy.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to manage ordering, receiving, maintaining, and issuing of internal stock items.
- Support asset movement and verification processes.
Skills and Competencies:
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Good communication, administrative, and coordination skills
- Basic knowledge of Accounting Standards (GRAP)
2. Internship: Programme for Administration Officer
Requirements:
- National Diploma or Degree in Office Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, or any related qualification.
Duties:
- Provide day-to-day administrative support including filing, scheduling, correspondence, and report preparation.
- Assist in consolidating and submitting mandatory documents such as Learning Plans and Declarations of Interest.
- Support the unit with meeting coordination, capturing accurate employee data, and maintaining compliance records for EE and Health & Safety.
Skills and Competencies:
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Strong communication and organization skills
- Basic knowledge of administrative functions and HR training processes
3. Internship: Water Management and Biodiversity
Requirements:
- Degree in Town and Regional Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geoscience, or Geohydrology.
Duties:
- Provide administrative and technical support to the Water Management and Biodiversity Directorate.
- Assist in areas such as Water Service Regulation, Catchment Management, Water Quality, and Open Space Planning.
- Manage documentation for borehole applications, development submissions, and monitoring programmes.
- Support departmental meetings and reporting processes.
Skills and Competencies:
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Good communication and coordination skills
- Understanding of Environmental Management, Town Planning, and key legislation such as the National Water Act and Water Services Act
4. Internship: Energy
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Engineering, Construction Project Management, or Energy Studies.
Duties:
- Support the development of energy policies, strategies, and plans for city compliance and sustainability.
- Provide assistance during policy development and planning processes across national, provincial, and local levels.
- Participate in planning, coordination, project management, and stakeholder engagement related to energy projects.
- Contribute to the implementation of energy frameworks and the Energy Service Delivery Framework within the City.
Skills and Competencies:
- Basic understanding of climate change, climate finance, and energy project development
- Knowledge of energy sector operations and sustainability concepts
- Strong coordination, report writing, and project management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
