The South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programmes for the 2026 academic year. These bursaries are designed to support passionate and dedicated music students in pursuing their studies and future careers in music.
About SASMT
Founded in 1918 in Cape Town, the South African Society of Music Teachers is the oldest professional music society in Southern Africa. For more than a century, SASMT has represented music teachers working in schools, private practice, music centres, colleges, and universities. The organisation remains committed to supporting both teachers and students, while also nurturing the growth of music education in South Africa.
SASMT Bursary Programmes Available
For the 2026 academic year, SASMT is offering five types of bursaries. These awards are open to paid-up members of SASMT and their students.
- SASMT Study Bursary – for students pursuing general music studies.
- David Reunert Bursary – for music students planning to take up music professionally, either as teachers or performers.
- Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship – for students studying stringed instruments, with a strong focus on the violin.
- Gladwell Scholarship – for studies in instrumental, vocal, or composition.
- Kathleen Irish Scholarship – for promising piano students in financial need who wish to study at tertiary level.
Recipients of these bursaries will also be required to perform at the next SASMT Annual General Meeting.
Eligibility Requirements
SASMT Study Bursary
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be a paid-up SASMT member for more than 2 years
- Must be studying or intending to study Music at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa
David Reunert Bursary
- Must be studying Music with the intention of becoming a professional teacher or performer
- Must be a student of a paid-up SASMT member
- Must reside in South Africa
- Must be between 18 and 25 years old
- Must have completed Matric with a National Senior Certificate or equivalent
Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be a student of a paid-up SASMT member
- Must be studying stringed instruments (particularly the violin)
- Can be studying music locally or internationally
Gladwell Scholarship
- Must be a South African citizen under the age of 25
- Must be a student of a paid-up SASMT member
- Must be studying instrumental, vocal, or composition
- Can be studying music locally or internationally at an institution or teacher approved by SASMT
- Must be of Grade 8 standard or higher in a recognised music examining body
Kathleen Irish Scholarship
- Must be a student of a paid-up SASMT member
- Must be in financial need
- Must show strong promise as a piano student intending to study at tertiary level
- Can be studying music locally or internationally at an institution or teacher approved by SASMT

- Proof of acceptance at a tertiary institution
- Recommendation by a SASMT member

- Motivational letter explaining financial need

- YouTube link to a recent unedited performance video (15–20 minutes, minimum 3 contrasting works from at least 2 style periods)
