About the Role
The Chief Professional Nurse will be responsible for delivering Primary Health Care (PHC) services that include promoting preventative, curative, and rehabilitative care for both clients and communities. The role also involves risk management, compliance with ethical and legal principles, and coordinating community outreach programmes — including school health initiatives and on-board services for the Phelophepa Health Care Train.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive PHC services by offering preventative, curative, and rehabilitative care to clients.
- Supervise nursing students in alignment with their academic curriculum, ensuring professional growth through mentorship and coaching.
- Apply PHC principles in all aspects of healthcare delivery and maintain high professional standards.
- Ensure efficient use and safekeeping of medical equipment, consumables, and resources.
- Provide accurate administrative records, compile statistical reports, and contribute to financial planning for healthcare services.
- Coordinate outreach programmes focusing on health education, obesity prevention, and diabetic screening for school learners.
- Conduct audiometry tests, identify hearing issues among learners, and facilitate referrals for further care.
- Offer minor ailment treatment to learners and liaise with school staff for follow-ups when necessary.
- Implement geriatric healthcare services within communities serviced by the Phelophepa Train.
- Ensure adherence to Transnet and Department of Health policies, occupational health standards, and safety regulations.
- Manage assets effectively and report all workplace incidents within 24 hours as per safety protocols.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of student nurses and ensure compliance with infection control and occupational health measures.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in nursing practice.
- A Diploma or Degree in General Nursing, including Community Health, Psychiatry, and Midwifery.
- A Diploma in Clinical Nursing Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Care (Primary Health Care Nursing).
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse, Midwife, Community Health Nurse, and PHC Nurse.
- Registration for Psychiatric Nursing will be considered an added advantage.
- A qualification in Nursing Administration or Nurse Education will be beneficial.
