City of Mbombela Township Economy Support Programme 2025/2026

The City of Mbombela, through its Department of Local Economic Development and Tourism, invites township entrepreneurs to apply for the Township Economy Support Programme. This initiative aims to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by providing the tools, machinery, and equipment needed to grow their businesses, promote formalisation, create jobs, and ensure long-term sustainability.

This programme is designed to strengthen township economies in Mpumalanga by providing direct, in-kind support rather than traditional funding, helping entrepreneurs improve productivity and efficiency.

Applications Open: 20 October 2025
Closing Date: 31 October 2025

What the Programme Covers

Eligible applicants can receive equipment, machinery, and tools valued up to R100,000, enabling businesses to:

  • Expand operations
  • Increase production and output
  • Focus on growth without resource limitations

Who Can Apply

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be registered with CIPC, including cooperatives
  • Be 100% South African owned
  • Have traded for at least two years
  • Operate in a township or rural area
  • Be registered with, or in the process of registering with, SARS
  • Have, or be willing to open, a business bank account
  • Attach a quotation for the requested machinery or tools

Exclusions:

  • Start-ups
  • Stock or consumable goods
  • Vehicles or buildings
  • Livestock or perishable goods
  • Monetary transfers or items exceeding R100,000

Supported Sectors

The programme welcomes applications from a variety of township enterprises, including but not limited to:

  • Salons and grooming services
  • Bakeries and shisanyamas
  • Clothing and textile production
  • Car washes and auto repair services
  • Creative, media, and filming enterprises
  • Butcheries and small-scale farming
  • Welding, fabrication, and construction support
  • Grass cutting, landscaping, and laundry services

Other sectors may also be considered if they meet MSME criteria.


How to Apply

Applications must be submitted by 31 October 2025. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Support for Start-Ups

Start-ups are not eligible for this programme, but assistance is available through government agencies such as:

  • Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA)
  • Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA)
  • National Youth Development Agency (NYDA)
  • Industrial Development Corporation (IDC)

These organisations provide training, mentorship, and funding support to help new businesses succeed.
