About the Bursary Provider – TETA

The Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) is one of South Africa’s 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). It plays a critical role in training and skills development within the transport sector, helping to ensure that South Africa builds a workforce equipped to meet future challenges.

TETA’s operational scope covers a wide range of transport-related areas, including maritime, road freight, freight handling, rail, taxi, aerospace, road passenger, forwarding and clearing. Through its bursary programme, the authority aims to empower students from disadvantaged backgrounds while strengthening the industry with qualified professionals.

Fields Covered by the TETA Bursary Programme

TETA invites students to apply for its Unemployed Bursary for the 2026 academic year. The bursary covers a broad range of study fields within the transport sector and beyond. These include:

Expenses Covered and Selection

The TETA bursary is comprehensive, covering tuition fees, prescribed books, accommodation (on or off campus), meals, and transport where necessary. This ensures that selected students can focus on their studies without the burden of financial challenges.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered:

  • Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be currently unemployed.
  • Must be in Matric or have completed Matric.
  • Must be studying or intending to study in one of the listed fields for 2026.
  • Must be registered or planning to register at a recognised public or accredited private institution, University of Technology, TVET College, or accredited aviation/diving school.
  • Must have achieved at least 40% overall average.
  • Commercial Diving applicants must be able to swim and have completed Matric.
  • Pilot Training applicants must hold the relevant prior licenses as specified.
  • Must be from a previously disadvantaged background.
  • Must have a total household income not exceeding R350 000 per annum.
  • Must comply with the requirements listed in the official TETA Bursary Guidelines 2026.

Required Supporting Documents

The following certified documents (not older than 6 months) must accompany your application:

  • Matric Students (entering 1st year in 2026): ID document, Grade 11 or Matric results, proof of application/acceptance, parent/guardian ID, proof of household income, affidavit confirming unemployment.
  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students: ID document, latest results or qualifications, proof of application/registration, parent/guardian ID, proof of household income, affidavit confirming unemployment, financial statements, and fee quotations.
  • TVET Students: ID document, Matric certificate, proof of application/registration, parent/guardian ID, proof of household income, affidavit confirming unemployment.
  • Pilot Training Students: ID document, Matric results, valid PPL or CPL depending on training level, proof of acceptance at an aviation school, parent/guardian ID, proof of household income, affidavit confirming unemployment, training quotations.
  • Commercial Diving Students: ID document, highest qualification, proof of acceptance at a diving school, parent/guardian ID, proof of household income, affidavit confirming unemployment, medical examination results, training quotations.

Closing Date

The closing date for the TETA Bursary is 24 September 2025 at 23:59. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
