The South African National Parks (SANParks) is now accepting applications for its External Bursary Programme, aimed at first-year students beginning their studies in 2026. This opportunity is open to young people living in communities near South Africa’s national parks.

What is the SANParks External Bursary Programme?
SANParks is known for its role in protecting the country’s natural heritage, but its work doesn’t end with conservation. The External Bursary Programme is part of a broader commitment to community upliftment, specifically targeting youth in park-neighbouring areas. Through this initiative, SANParks helps eligible students gain access to higher education at public universities, TVET colleges, and universities of technology across South Africa.

Applicants must be pursuing a qualification in one of the following study areas:
- Environmental Sciences
- Nature Conservation
- Environmental Management
- Green Energy
- Environmental Engineering
- Sustainable Development
- Game Ranch Management
- Tourism
- Hospitality Management
- Resort Management
- Tour Guiding
- Events and Conference Management
- Social Sciences
- Community Development
- Economic Development
- Socio-Economic Development
- Development Studies and related fields
Who Should Apply?
To be eligible for the bursary, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be between the ages of 18 and 35
- Live in a community located next to a national park, as outlined in SANParks’ management plans
- Be entering their first year of undergraduate or TVET study in 2026
- Have been accepted at an accredited South African public higher education institution
- For current students: must have passed all registered modules with a 100% success rate
Preference will be given to women, people with disabilities, and individuals from designated groups.

Applicants need to submit the following:
- A motivational letter explaining the need for funding and the relevance of the chosen field
- A comprehensive, up-to-date CV
- A certified copy of a valid South African ID
- The latest certified academic record
- Proof of acceptance from a public higher education institution
- Proof of residence
- An affidavit confirming household income, particularly for those receiving government grants
