Placement Sites in the Eastern Cape
Successful candidates will be placed at one of the following facilities:
Siphethu Hospital serving Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi districts
Elliot Provincial Hospital serving OR Tambo and Chris Hani districts
Isilimela Hospital serving OR Tambo and Chris Hani districts
Nompumelelo Hospital serving Buffalo City and Amathole districts
Each site has one available post.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed Phlebotomy Technicians will support Point of Care services within healthcare facilities. Duties include both technical and patient-facing responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include:
Collecting blood and other specimens safely and accurately
Performing Point of Care tests, including centrifugation where required
Observing patient condition before, during, and after specimen collection
Providing pre- and post-test counselling to parents, guardians, and children
Maintaining accurate patient records and documentation
Running External Quality Assessment samples and performing internal quality controls
Troubleshooting testing failures and escalating unresolved issues
Logging equipment breakdowns and monitoring supplier service responses
Training and mentoring healthcare workers on Point of Care procedures
Participating in teaching, training, and continuous improvement activities
Monitoring stock levels and ensuring availability of consumables
Maintaining safe housekeeping practices in line with legislation
Providing general nursing support when required, including first aid and immunisation assistance
Minimum Requirements and Competencies
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
Matric (NQF Level 4)
Registration with the HPCSA as a Phlebotomy Technician
One to three years of relevant work experience
Candidates must also demonstrate:
Knowledge of Point of Care testing procedures
Understanding of specimen safety precautions
Knowledge of pre-collection, intra-collection, and post-collection factors
Familiarity with laboratory tests, disease processes, and research projects
Computer literacy with data capturing and analysis skills
Strong communication, counselling, and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and work safely in hazardous environments
Good time management, initiative, and problem-solving ability
