About the Trainee Provincial Inspector Programme 2025–2027
The Department is recruiting 200 Trainee Provincial Inspectors for the 2025–2027 intake at the Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg.
This is a two-year fixed-term contract during which trainees will undergo intensive training and complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma.
After successful completion, candidates will be permanently appointed as Provincial Inspectors (Salary Level 6), subject to a 12-month probation period.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a Trainee Provincial Inspector, responsibilities will include:
Traffic Law Enforcement
- Enforcing traffic regulations and managing traffic flow.
- Coordinating and securing accident scenes.
- Participating in projects such as speed enforcement and road safety operations.
- Issuing notices, executing arrests, and testifying in court when required.
- Escorting abnormal vehicles and monitoring overload control.
Driver and Vehicle Compliance
- Conducting learner’s and driver’s licence tests.
- Carrying out vehicle roadworthiness inspections.
- Monitoring compliance at testing stations.
Visible Policing and Crime Prevention
- Supporting motorists and providing escort duties.
- Taking part in roadblocks and special enforcement operations.
- Warning drivers about road hazards.
Administrative and Support Duties
- Maintaining accurate administrative procedures.
- Complying with the Firearms and Ammunition Act.
- Participating in HR development and training initiatives.
- Upholding the professional image of the Directorate: Traffic Law Enforcement.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent (NQF Level 4).
- A valid Code B driver’s licence (manual).
- South African Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- No criminal record (subject to SAPS clearance).
- A recent medical certificate (not older than 3 months) confirming fitness.
- Under 35 years of age at the start of training.
- Physically and mentally fit for strenuous activity.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Note: Candidates will undergo written tests, driving evaluations, medical and fitness examinations, and interviews.

Important Information
- Successful candidates must be able to carry firearms and pass firearm competency assessments.
- Alcohol screening will be conducted during selection—candidates testing positive will be disqualified.
- Trainees must serve a minimum of 12 months in the Road Traffic Inspectorate after completing the Traffic Officer Diploma. Failure to do so will result in liability for the full course fees.
