About the Community Development Work Learnership

This is a full-time, accredited 12-month learnership designed to equip learners with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in community development work.

The programme follows a blended learning approach, where learners complete formal coursework through an accredited training provider while gaining real-world exposure in community-based settings under professional supervision.

Community Development Work learners will be required to work across Communicare complexes and surrounding communities and must be willing to travel as part of their duties. A monthly stipend will be paid for the duration of the learnership.

Learnership Structure

Theoretical Training

  • Thirty percent of the programme consists of intensive theory delivered by an accredited training provider
  • Learners must successfully complete all coursework requirements

Workplace Training

  • Seventy percent of the programme is practical workplace-based learning
  • Learners will be assigned responsibilities aligned with qualification outcomes
  • Supervision and mentorship will be provided by a qualified Social Worker
  • Learners must complete a Portfolio of Evidence to be declared competent

Key Responsibilities

Learners will be expected to:

  • Assist Social Workers in delivering services related to the care, support, protection, and development of vulnerable individuals, families, groups, and communities
  • Support Social Workers in addressing issues that may result in or arise from social instability
  • Perform administrative and support duties related to community development programmes as required

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Have completed Matric (Grade 12)
  • Be unemployed
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be able to commit to the full 12-month learnership
  • Be available from March 2026 until February 2027
  • Be fluent in English and at least one other South African language
  • Have prior experience in community-based work
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and be willing to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Be enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to learn

A valid driver’s licence will be an advantage. Preference will be given to applicants who have previously participated in Vulamathuba Economic Mobility Programmes, including Matric support, Job Readiness, or Skills Programmes.

  • Originally certified copies of an identity document and Matric certificate, not older than three months
