About the Scholarship Provider

The Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) was established in honour of the late Dr Doug Banks, a passionate advocate for renewable energy and improving the quality of life in under-resourced communities.

As an independent trust, DBREV provides scholarships for postgraduate studies in Renewable Energy, Energy Poverty, and Energy Access. The programme continues Dr Banks’s legacy by supporting students committed to delivering sustainable, affordable, and clean energy solutions that can transform lives in Africa.

Applications are now open for the DBREV Scholarship 2026, which supports students pursuing Masters degree studies in areas focused on addressing energy poverty and improving energy access through renewable energy systems.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:

  • Must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Must be intending to pursue a Masters degree in a field related to energy access and energy poverty.
  • Must be studying or planning to study at a recognised South African university.
  • Must be committed to making a positive impact in Africa through renewable energy.
  • Must demonstrate a passion for addressing energy poverty and energy access.
  • Must have an academic background in one of the following:
    • Engineering
    • Science
    • Environmental and Geographical Science
    • Finance
    • Economics
    • Development Studies
