Eligibility Criteria

For Undergraduate & Honours Applicants

  • South African citizen
  • Under 35 years old
  • Studying or intending to study full-time in a listed field in 2026
  • Accepted at a recognised public university in South Africa
  • Minimum 65% average from undergraduate level to current level
  • Must have passed all registered courses
  • Unemployed at the time of application
  • Preference to previously disadvantaged applicants and NSFAS-funded students

For Masters & Doctoral Applicants

  • South African citizen
  • Under 35 years old
  • Full-time study in an eligible field at a public South African university in 2026
  • Minimum 65% average from undergraduate to current level
  • Strong research and academic writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Must be motivated, organised, and able to meet deadlines
  • Preference to previously disadvantaged applicants and NSFAS-funded students

Work-Back Obligation

Bursary recipients must work for CSIR one year for every year of funding received after graduation.
