About CETA
The Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) supports unemployed youth and employees in construction through training and development. Backed by the Department of Higher Education and Training, CETA focuses on skills for jobs like bricklaying, plumbing, civil engineering, and quantity surveying, with programmes accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).
Programme Goals
CETA’s mission is to build a skilled workforce that can contribute to infrastructure growth and economic empowerment. The programmes provide practical, workplace-based training along with formal qualifications that meet national standards.
Available Programmes
- Learnerships: For Grade 12 holders, lasting 12 to 18 months, with a monthly stipend between R2,500 and R4,500. Learn trades like bricklaying and plumbing through hands-on work and theory.
- Bursaries: Up to R80,000 to cover tuition, books, and accommodation for those pursuing civil engineering or quantity surveying degrees. Requires Grade 12 with Maths/Science and tertiary acceptance.
- Internships: For diploma or degree holders, lasting 12 to 24 months, with stipends of R2,500 to R4,500 monthly. Gain experience in construction management, engineering, and related roles.
- Skills Programmes: Short courses from 1 to 6 months in areas such as electrical construction and road works. Partial funding available, but no stipend.
Who Can Apply?
- South African citizens aged 18–35 for learnerships and bursaries; no age limit for internships.
- Must have Grade 12 or higher qualifications depending on the programme.
- Both unemployed and employed in construction are eligible, depending on the course.
- No previous participation in the same CETA programme.
- Clear criminal record required.
- Priority given to candidates from designated equity groups and residents of Gauteng, Western Cape, or KwaZulu-Natal.
Skills and Traits Needed
Good communication, a strong interest in construction, physical fitness for site work, basic numeracy, and computer literacy are important. Attention to safety and quality standards is essential.
