About the Amazon Bursary Programme
Applications are now open for the Amazon Software Development Engineer (SDE) Recruitment Bursary for the 2026 academic year.
The bursary is aimed at South African students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who are passionate about technology and innovation. Successful candidates will receive full funding and an opportunity to intern at Amazon, with the potential for full-time employment after graduation.
Fields of Study Covered
The Amazon Bursary covers Undergraduate and Honours degrees in the following fields:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Data Science
- Information Systems
- Information Technology (IT)
- Machine Learning
- Software Engineering
Benefits of the Amazon Bursary
Successful bursary recipients will receive funding for:
- Full or partial tuition fees (capped amount)
- Study materials, including books and stationery
- Laptop or personal computer
- Accommodation (university residence or private)
- Transport and living expenses
Paid Internship Opportunity
In addition to funding, students will join a paid summer internship at Amazon, where they will:
- Work on real-world, impactful projects
- Gain mentorship from experienced Amazon engineers
- Network with other interns and employees (“Amazonians”)
- Attend training and professional development events
- Be evaluated for a permanent Software Development Engineer position after graduation
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Amazon Bursary 2026, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Have completed Matric
- Be studying towards a degree in one of the listed fields
- Be entering your final year of a 3-year degree or third year of a 4-year degree in 2026
- Commit to completing Honours (NQF Level 8) by 2027
- Maintain a minimum average of 65%
- Be studying at an accredited South African university
- Be available for a paid internship during summer vacation
- Be available for full-time employment with Amazon in January 2028 (subject to job offer)
