About the Internship Programme
The ARC Internship Programme provides an opportunity to actively participate in cutting-edge research projects focusing on DNA marker technologies. These technologies are essential for breeding programmes that aim to enhance crop performance and resilience.
Interns will work closely with breeders and researchers to design experiments, analyse genetic data, and contribute to reports and publications. The programme also encourages engagement with Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBR) and intellectual property (IP) initiatives, ensuring knowledge dissemination benefits both the scientific community and the agricultural sector.
Key Responsibilities
Interns will gain experience in a variety of tasks, including:
- Designing and implementing molecular breeding experiments with breeders.
- Staying updated on developments in DNA marker technologies through literature reviews.
- Capturing, analysing, and interpreting genetic data accurately.
- Supervising and mentoring postgraduate students, technicians, and research assistants.
- Contributing to scientific reports and publications.
- Ensuring adherence to ARC health and safety (SHE/OHS) standards.

Minimum Requirements
To qualify, applicants must meet the following:
- Academic Qualification: MSc in Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Plant Breeding, or Genetics.
- Technical Skills: Strong foundation in molecular biology, plant molecular markers, and genetic data analysis.
- Personal Skills: Attention to detail, accurate data collection, project planning, and time management.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication with the ability to liaise effectively.
- Computer Proficiency: Advanced MS Office skills, particularly Excel.
- Other Requirements: Knowledge of health and safety regulations and ability to mentor and manage teams.
Remuneration and Conditions
The ARC provides a competitive remuneration package aligned with the responsibilities of the role. Permanent appointments are subject to a six-month probation period. Preference is given to candidates from designated groups in accordance with the ARC Employment Equity Plan. Appointments require a positive security clearance.
