About the Apprenticeship and P1/P2 Programme
The ABB Apprenticeship and P1/P2 Programme is structured to help participants develop the technical and professional skills required to launch a successful engineering career. Participants are placed within specific ABB divisions where they receive hands-on exposure aligned with their field of study.
All ABB Young Talent Programmes follow the 70:20:10 learning model, which focuses on practical experience, mentorship, and formal learning. Most of the learning takes place through real workplace tasks, supported by guidance from experienced professionals and targeted classroom-based training.
Throughout the programme, participants work closely with teams, leaders, and managers while contributing to ABB’s operational and strategic objectives.
Fields of Study for the 2025/2026 Intake
ABB is currently recruiting candidates in the following engineering fields:
Electrical Engineering (P1/P2)
Electrical Engineering students will gain exposure to switchgear testing across various areas, including primary, secondary, modular, and commissioning processes. The programme also provides experience in both electrical and mechanical design aspects related to switchgear systems.
Mechanical Engineering (Apprenticeship)
Mechanical Engineering apprentices will be exposed to basic design and drafting while learning about the electrical and mechanical operation of electric motors. This pathway focuses on building strong foundational technical skills that are critical in industrial environments.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the ABB Apprenticeship and P1/P2 Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Mechanical Engineering N5–N6 graduates for the Apprenticeship programme
- Electrical Engineering National Diploma students for the P1/P2 programme
- No more than two years of working experience
- A minimum academic average of 65% throughout studies
- South African citizenship is required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- A growth mindset with a focus on continuous learning and self-improvement
- Proven problem-solving ability and innovative thinking
- Excellent interpersonal skills, leadership potential, and confidence
- A strong willingness to learn and develop professionally
